It’s Time to Text the Vote!

September 26th, 2006 | No Comments | Posted in League News, Upcoming Events

In another great leap forward for mankind, the PLYVEF is starting a new campaign to register voters via text messaging! That’s right, just text “Pgh” to “75444″ on your cell phone and get a voter registration form mailed to your door, filled out and ready to go, just sign it and drop it back in the mail by the October 10 th deadline. Then, get a nice reminder of where to vote on election day! Our street team of volunteers is already encouraging people to register this way, but we’re hosting a press conference and demonstration to tell everyone about our new technology Thursday, September 28 th at 9:30AM at Market Square downtown. If you’re going to be in the area, stop by and bring your cell phone!

Local Groups Launch “Unlock the Vote” Billboard Campaign

September 13th, 2006 | No Comments | Posted in League News, PA League in the News

Pittsburgh, PA - On Thursday, September 14th at 10:30am at the corner of Wylie Ave. and Erin St. in the Hill District, the League of Young Voters Education Fund and the ACLU of Pennsylvania will hold a press conference in front of one of their newly produced billboards to mark the launch of “Unlock the Vote,” an educational ad campaign informing the formerly incarcerated of their right to vote in the November election. The billboard campaign was initiated by a representative from Lamar Advertising, who read about Port Authority Transit’s refusal to display the League’s voting rights advertisement on PAT buses. A Lamar employee contacted the League of Young Voters and suggested a billboard campaign to reach ex-offenders. “We really hoped to run these ads on Port Authority buses, but it was becoming clear that the legal issues would not be resolved prior to the November elections,” explains Lisa Krebs, coordinator of the Unlock the Vote campaign. “Because our message is both critical and time-sensitive, we decided to proceed with the billboard campaign. The project still aims, however, to run bus ads in time for the Spring primary.” The League of Young Voters will be joined by several local leaders, including Allegheny County Recorder of Deeds Valerie McDonald Roberts and a representative from City Councilwoman Tonya Payne’s office. The billboards are part of a voter registration, voter education, and voter mobilization project aimed at engaging ex-offenders and Allegheny County Jail inmates in the political process. The project is supported by the Three Rivers Community Foundation and the Maurice Falk Fund. “As an ex-offender, civic participation has been critical to my own rehabilitation,” says Taili Thompson, outreach director for the project. “It allows me to be part of the solution to the problems plaguing my Northside community. I truly believe voting can help many young people facing the issues I faced upon release from prison.” The press conference will be held in the Hill District, one of six locations where the League of Young Voters Education Fund and the ACLU have placed the billboards. Other locations include East Liberty/Homewood, McKees Rocks, Swissvale, McKeesport, and the Northside.

A Sad Farewell to a Great Mayor

September 2nd, 2006 | No Comments | Posted in Related News

The League of Young Voters extends our deepest sympathies to the family of Mayor Bob O’Connor. Mayor O’Connor has served this city long and well, as a business man, an active community member, and an elected official. Even previous to his election as mayor, Mr. O’Connor dedicated his life to making Pittsburgh the best community possible. It is with deep sadness that we mark his passing. “Today is one of the darkest days in the history of this proud city. The loss of our mayor Bob O’Connor is a great blow. No one personified the spirit of this city: humility, hard work and integrity with the same vigor and intensity as our Mayor. On behalf of the League of Young Voters we send our deepest condolences to the O’Connor family in this trying time,” Khari Mosley, Director of the League of Young Voters stated. Mayor O’Connor truly was “everybody’s mayor;” regardless of neighborhood, political party, occupation or age, we all looked to Mayor O’Connor as a true Pittsburgher. Along with our sympathies we extend our gratitude to the O’Connor family for allowing us to know the mayor and be touched by his spirit. His life of service will be forever remembered by the people of this city.
