The PA League was recently featured in the series of Right Here columns about 20-something Pittsburghers who work at nonprofit organizations.
“Our goal is not only to engage [voters], but keep them engaged after this election. … I’ve never seen an election with this much enthusiasm,” Ms. Rincon said.

456 new voters enfranchised!
Roxanne Banks-Williams and Terry Griffin (and former League interns Justin Witmer and Moshe Sherman) and about 50 more amazing volunteers registered the inmates at the Allegheny County Jail today — and came back with 456 new voter registrations!
Now don’t you wish you were there? Volunteer to help copy and stamp all of these so we can turn them in to the Division of Elections!

But the ACLU has our back, and we’re waiting for our jury trial to be scheduled to see if they think the Port Authority acted constitutionally by rejecting the ad.
Here’s a summary, taken from Judge McVerry’s opinion against partial summary judgment in our favor:
“Plaintiffs, Pittsburgh League of Young Voters Education Fund (“Fund”) and American Civil Liberties Foundation of Pennsylvania (“ACLU”), brought this lawsuit on December 8, 2006 by filing an amended complaint pursuant to 42 U.S. C. § 1983 alleging that defendants violated their rights under the First and Fourteenth Amendments to the United States Constitution by refusing to accept and display their proposed ex-offender voter-education advertisements.
Plaintiffs have filed the instant motion for partial summary judgment in which they contend that they are entitled to judgment as a matter of law on the issue of the defendants’ liability because 1) Port Authority designated its bus-advertising space as a public forum, 2) Port Authority acted unreasonably and committed viewpoint discrimination by refusing to run their advertisements despite having run similar advertisements in the past, and 3) Port Authority’s advertising policy is unconstitutionally vague.”

Thanks to Natalia Rudiak for inviting us to the Carrick Corn Fest! It was a great
opportunity to meet some people and get a little sun! (It was HOT! But
there’s always a silver lining right? Like those ice-cold Ginger Ales?)

They, in partnership with the Sierra Club, held a press conference before sending the petitions to County Executive Dan Onorato, Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, City Council, Don Barden, and Governor Rendell.

The masterminds of this event, high school students Daniela Valdes and Sandra Hartkopf, coordinated the signature drive through Facebook.

Of course the League had to come out and show some love to engaged and empowered young people.
Pittsburgh, PA: After initially agreeing to attend, Mayor Luke Ravenstahl has decided to withdraw from a Youth Forum on April 16th.
Following Bill Peduto’s withdrawal from the mayoral race, Mayor Ravenstahl is running unopposed in the May 15th Democratic primary. Pittsburgh’s youngest mayor had agreed to a question and answer session on the issues facing our city in lieu of a debate with Mr. Peduto. The Pennsylvania League of Young Voters expresses concern at the lack of accountability and transparency demonstrated by the Mayor. The fact that he has not opponent does not release him from responsibility to be in communication with constituents. Much has been made of the Mayor’s youth, but he has not been responsive to Youth organizations’ requests for dialogue.
The Forum, co-sponsored by Greater Pittsburgh Student Voices, League of Women Voters, B-PEP, and the Oakland Community Council, will take place at Connections, in Oakland at Semple and Bates streets, from 6:30-9pm on April 16th. With the withdrawal of the Mayor, the event will feature a reception and a panel discussion on the future of Pittsburgh and candidates for City controller candidates.
